Beaches in Leyte
Both Leyte and Southern Leyte are primarily associated with the pivotal role they played in history, but today it is also turning into one of the Philippines’ finest destinations, thanks to its beaches, whose beauty is being rediscovered by tourists.
White Beach
Some 5 miles (8 km) away from Tacloban City lies Barangay San Jose, where this idyllic body of water is found.
Few beaches are more deserving of the name; despite the presence of some resorts and cottages, White Beach has managed to maintain its purity, and is not just an ideal location for swimming, but also diving or having a picnic with friends, or going on a boating/fishing trip.
The Amihan Cebu Woodlands
For a combination of provincial living, the Amihan Cebu Woodlands, near San isidro and Calubian, is the first choice.
Aside from the serene waters of the beach, you can also enjoy the sights and sounds of living the country life. Not only are there a wide array of trees (from coconuts to acacia) there are also numerous shrubs, plants, flowers and mangroves; there are also plenty of animals roaming about, from cows to cattle, that complete the picture.
Red Beach
Situated between the barangays of Baras and Candahug, Palo Leyte (almost 6 miles or 10 km from Tacloban) Red Beach is not just renowned for its beauty but also for its place in history.
This was, after all, the very beach where the Allied Forces, led by General Douglas MacArthur, made their return landing to the Philippines. Aside from statues of these figures in the lagoon, Red Beach has also become popular as a site for swimming, leisurely walks and just having fun at the beach with friends.
The popularity of Red Beach can also be seen in the growing number of first class resorts and facilities that abound in the place, making it one of the most popular destinations for both local and foreign beach lovers.
Bitu-On Beach
Bitu-On Beach is near Barangay San Roque in Liloan in Southern Leyte, Reachable by boat, it offers the tourist a splendid view of the skies, perfect for strolling on the beach.
While you can lie on the beach and feel the sun, others prefer to look at the various seashells that appear on the seashore. Aside from the shells, there are also several types of fish in the area.
Kuting Beach
Macrohon in Southern Leyte is home to Kuting Beach, one of the lesser known, but most impressive beaches in the province.
Kuting Beach, because it is not as often visited as the others, is the place to go to if you are looking for some quiet picnic time with your friends or love ones. The white sands are very smooth and silk like, blending in nicely with the deep blue waters.
Cuatro Islas
There are several beautiful island beaches in the province of Leyte, but one group of islands stand out, and that is the Coatro Islas.
There are four isles (Apid, Digyo, Mahaba and Hiumokilan), and these beautiful lands are particularly noted for their smooth sands. Aside from the beautiful beach, there are also plenty of coral reefs in the waters, making them ideal for scuba divers.
Maamo Beach
Just like Bitu-On Beach, Maamo Beach is also situated near Barangay San Roque in Southern Leyte. And just like Bitu-On, it is a sight to behold.
Maamo (meaning “gentle”) Beach can be reached by way of a boat. The deep sea is host to numerous fish, making it a haven for fishermen. The coastline on the other hand, is noted for its white sands and the cool breeze emanating from the ocean.
